Every Creature Has a Story

National Iguana Awareness Day

Ancient Eyes, Gentle Strength

Iguanas look like they belong to another age.

With long tails, strong claws, textured scales, and watchful eyes, they carry an almost prehistoric presence.

But behind that striking appearance is an animal with complex needs, distinct behaviors, and a surprisingly sensitive nature.

National Iguana Awareness Day is a chance to appreciate these remarkable reptiles while encouraging better understanding of what responsible iguana care really requires.

Why This Day Matters

Iguanas are sometimes chosen as pets because they look fascinating when they are young.

But they can grow large, live many years, and require specialized care.

Proper temperature, UVB lighting, humidity, nutrition, climbing space, and enclosure size all matter.

Without the right environment, an iguana can become stressed or unhealthy.

Awareness helps prevent impulse purchases and encourages people to research before bringing one home.

A Creature Built for the Canopy

Many iguanas are excellent climbers.

Their strong limbs and claws help them move through branches, while their long tails help with balance and defense.

Their bodies are adapted to warm environments, and basking plays an important role in digestion and overall health.

They remind us that good animal care begins with understanding the environment an animal was built to live in.

🐾 Pet Care Tip — Iguanas

Iguanas need much more than a small tank.

Provide a large, vertically oriented enclosure with climbing opportunities, proper heat gradients, UVB lighting, appropriate humidity, and a species-appropriate diet.

For green iguanas, the diet should be primarily leafy greens and vegetables rather than animal protein.

Research adult size before bringing one home, because a healthy iguana may require a very large enclosure.
